Friendships are enough, and he does those well enough.

He does so many other things really well that he doesn't need a love story subplot. He lives in Utah with his wife and children and teaches creative writing at Brigham Young University. I'm mostly reading it for the ending and so I can put off reading SA 3&4 a bit so the wait for 5 doesn't feel as long (I stopped after 2 so I could binge 3&4).Īs for romance, I really wish he would stop trying. Brandon Sanderson grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska. I think Sanderson went too "foppish" at the beginning and his transformation feels too suddenĭenth & Tonk Fah feel a bit fake and stereotypical - I like that he's giving them more focus for development around the middle, but they still feel a bit flat, like many of the characters in Mistborn, yet they feel like they'll be central to the climax ( Denth revenge story?)Īnd honestly, that's fine. Lightsong - feels like two different characters from the first part to the middle. Maybe this improves, but it feels like Vivenna succeeds far too easily maybe her mercs are too good Hopefully the ending will change that, but it probably won't do above a 3.īreath system - why is it based on a specific number of breaths? Yet somehow there are "stronger" and "weaker" breaths? It feels too "scientific" if the specific numbers become relevant later I'll forgive it, but for now it feels forced I'm pretty much exactly in the middle of the book, and if I had to give it a rating now, it would be 2 or 3 stars because it's a bit forgettable. I've read about the same as you, and while I enjoy his work, I tend to read for the ending, not the experience. I like some of the characters and it's not unpleasant, but it doesn't feel like his best work. I'm currently reading it and deciding whether to DNF. Halfway through, it did slow down so I took off half a star from the rating, but the ending was worth it. Another major theme would be deception: just when you think you have a character figured out, you find out that’s far from the case. Brandon started the novel one way and ended it another way. The character development was well written, as well as the story itself. Its interesting about Sanderson decided to center a work of fantasy around politics with hints of romance and family dynamics interwoven. The major theme of this novel is politics. It’s an excellent way to transition into the Cosmere universe and get a feel of his writing. A lot of readers actually choose Warbreaker as their first book into the Cosmere and now that i read it, it’s a wise desicion. GoodreadsNo knowledge of the cosmere is required to read as your debut to Sanderson's works. This is one of Sanderson’s standalone novels a part of the Cosmere universe.
